Z shrugged, "just letting you know that the plants are growing so much that they'll soon drain the land dry."

"Oh," she said, starting a light rain.

[Trace Carter]

Z shook his head, "the plants will die anyway when the rising salt water permeates the earth."

[paladin313]

"And they shall fertilize the soil once the purging is over and I rescind the seas," she said, as if to say, "Duh!"
     "It's called the circle of life, dummy!"

[Trace Carter]

"so you're saying that the high levels of salt that will be absorbed into the soil will not prevent future plants from absorbing nutrients and damage the soil structure?"

She looked at him oddly, and she said, "Of course not.  The right amount of salts can actually act as a fertilizer."

(She is right: salt, in the right amounts, will aid growth.  Too much would prevent it.)

[Trace Carter]

(and submerging the soil in several feet of ocean water is not too much?)

(Not really, because ground that has surfaced from the oceans has been shown to be quite fertile, depending on what is grown in it.  You have more than salt in it, but also the decomposing of both plant and animal life in the soil, which would feed plants.)

(Grounds that have surfaced from the oceans and that has been shown to be quite fertile is due to all the saline content being washed away by years of rain. Land based plants were never meant to grow in salted soil.)

(And she could accelerate that process once things are done.)

(it just makes me think of sewing salt into the earth.  I mean a city will be submerged under the ocean long enough to remove the taint.  that would allow the seawater to permeate the earth to the point where no land plants will grow.)

(But once exposed to the rain, then the salt can be washed out.)

(Then it would have to be at monsoon levels of rain for years.)

"Fertilizer? See, this is why you need technology! Natural salts immediately kills vegetation due to the sodium ions in them. Only non-sodium salts can be used as fertilizer and for that you need technology!" countered Skuld.

Ian rolled with it and said, "There you go!  You two CAN work together.  Maybe the two of you can clean things up to the point where, no matter what humans do, they won't wreck everything."
