(I've been to many shave ice places on o'ahu and they are all as I described.  only one was different but that one had a lot of japanese toppings like pudding and mochi-balls.)

(Those places are concentrated at the Northern end of the O'ahu. But it's really common on the big island. Even though they're called Japanese style (Which is simply adding the red beans), it's exactly the same except for the toppings and flavoring.)

(I was just going by the descriptions I found on line, and, from what I understand, the Hawaiians will say theirs is not the same as Japan's.  In fact, some would say their's is unique to them.)

He did up rainbow, and did hers as well.

(I looked it up and we're both correct.  The hawaiian style is what you described, but I also have been to many places on oahu that serve it how I described.)
